U.S.A.T LIBERTY SHIPWRECK

Liberty was launched on 19 June 1918 by the Federal Shipbuilding Company in Kearny New Jersey.  Acquired by the United States Navy as animal transport cargo ship for the World War I [USS Liberty (ID-3461)]. In November 1940, Liberty was one of ten ships taken up by the Unites States Army for defense service during the World War II. Renamed U.S.A.T Liberty for United States Army Transport Liberty. In January 1942, she was in route from Australia to the Philippines with a cargo of railway parts and rubber when she was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine [I-66] south of the Lombok Strait. Two destroyers took her in tow attempting to reach the Celukan Bawang Harbour in Singaraja but as the ship was too damaged they decided to beach her in the north-eastern coast. The Mount Agung eruption from 1963 has led the ship to slip off the beach. She now lies on a sandy slope in a depth of between 4 & 30 meters.

LIBERTY CORAL GARDEN & SUCI PLACE

Coral nursery projects aimed at expanding coral reefs have been underway along the coastline since the 1980s. These two dive sites are a fine example of preservation and conservation by the local community, with coral gardens in the form of statues and concrete structures promoting coral growth.

With their natural shallow coral reefs, these two sites are a paradise for macro enthusiasts. Suci Place is a gem adorned with statues representing deities from Hindu mythology, created by the Matahari resort as a reef since 2012.
